Sneakers, once a staple of an athlete’s wardrobe, have become a cultural symbol of our times. Adults and teenagers are obsessed!
Research by sociologist Yuniya Kawamura describes three waves of this phenomenon. The first in the 1970s was an underground sneaker culture and the emergence of hip-hop. The second wave in 1984 began with the launch of Nike Air Jordans. The third is a product of the digital age and a corresponding growth in sneaker marketing and resell culture.
The global sneaker resale market is forecast to be worth $30 billion by 2030. Reselling is very lucrative for entrepreneurs, and has created a generation of sneaker enthusiasts.
This painting was created for my teenage son who describes his shoes (many of which are pictured here) as “wearable art”!
